1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
I needed an outlet for my opinions
2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
When people say they plan to buy a certain book, because my review helped them decide if it’s worth purchasing. Makes me feel useful
3. What types of books do you review?
Urban fantasy, futuristic, young adult.
4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
Most books I read are urban fantasy.
5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Literature, or anything that involves a lot of thinking on the reader’s behalf to get the most out of a book - I expect authors to do the thinking for me
6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Ask first.
7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
No, sorry. I spend too much time on the computer as it is
8. Can an author guest blog for you?
If I approve of their topic, or I choose one for them.
9. Do you host book giveaways?
Sure.
10. Do you interview authors?
Only if I could be bothered. Which is rare, but it’s happened in the past
11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
I haven’t before, but I’d be interested to.
12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
Books clearly marked as ARCs will be read almost immediately. Anything else has to get in line - I read books from shortest to longest, so the longer your book is, the longer it’ll take me to get around to reading it. If your book is 369 pages or less, I’ll start on it as soon as I finish the book I’m currently reading (which is 369 pages, if you were wondering where I pulled that number from).
13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
http://flamesrising.com (if my editor approves), Shelfari, Facebook, GoodReads. Unfortunately, Amazon requires you purchase something from them before they’ll let you review.
14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
If they request me to. Otherwise they can subscribe to my blog.
15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
Hard copy books only. And you must be willing to post to Australia, because that’s where I live.
16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Tez Miller. Share the summary, and if I like it, I’ll pass on my postal address.
Add any information you’d like to share that wasn’t covered in the questions below.
I’m not much for romance, but if your book is urban fantasy or futuristic, I’ll try it. I prefer dark UF to light. I specifically request futuristic, not hard sci-fi as I probably won’t be able to wrap my mind around it. To give you a better idea of what I’m looking for, here are some of my favourite authors (with specifications when necessary):
YOUNG ADULT URBAN FANTASY: Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Rachel Caine, Cassandra Clare, Melissa Metz (Fingerprints series), Laurie Faria Stolarz
YOUNG ADULT FUTURISTIC: Marilyn Kaye (Replica series), Mary E. Pearson (The Adoration of Jenna Fox)
YOUNG ADULT: Rachel Cohn, Robert Muchamore, Alex Sanchez, Shelley Stoehr, Jacqueline Wilson
URBAN FANTASY: Jennifer Armintrout, Kelley Armstrong, Keri Arthur, Jes Battis, Rachel Caine, Kim Harrison, Mark Henry, Vicki Pettersson, Jennifer Rardin, Lilith Saintcrow, Jeri Smith-Ready, Rachel Vincent, Kit Whitfield, Kim Wilkins
THRILLER: Nicci French, Tess Gerritsen, Alex Kava (Maggie O’Dell series), M. J. Rose, Erica Spindler, P. J. Tracy
