Meet SMS Book Reviews

Blog Name: SMS Book Reviews
Blog URL: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
Blog Owner: Kathleen Garber (Callista)

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
I started out writing reviews at Amazon but then they added the rule that you couldn’t add reviews if you hadn’t bought from them and I hadn’t at the time. So I started up a blog (this was in 2001) and moved my reviews over. For many years I just posted a review here and there when I remember then in 2006 I found the book blogging community and I haven’t looked back.

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
I like sharing my thoughts with others in the hopes that they will find a book they like but might not have heard about otherwise. I really want to get the word out about non-fiction and how fun it can be to read too!

3. What types of books do you review?
I review lots of different books but I prefer Non-fiction, especially Parenting and Paganism and anything life related like Psychology, Sociology, Culture or Gender Studies and the like. I love children’s and teen’s fiction and non-fiction too. For adult ficiton, my top picks would be mysteries and crime novels with paranormal a close second.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
I would say Parenting and children’s picture books are what I’ve read the most of. I’ve also read quite a bit of Pagan books and books about life (marriage, culture, gender, sexuality)

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
I will not review romance, political, business books or Christian non-fiction and I don’t like too much Christian Fiction.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Yes

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
No. I find it very hard to read on a screen.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
I’ve never done it before but would be willing to give it a go.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
I cannot at this time ship books out myself but if the author or publisher can do the shipping, I can hold the giveaway.

10. Do you interview authors?
I’ve never done an author interview but am not entirely opposed to doing one. I don’t wish to do lots but if an author requests it, I wouldn’t say no.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
Yes I’m a part of MotherTalk, Kids Book Buzz and I have done tours with Multnomah Books.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
I’m quite swamped right now but I try to get a review done within 3 months. I”m working on making that wait time shorter. However I can get a book done within a week if need be. If the book is time sensitive, I just need to know beforehand.

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
I cross post reviews to Good Reads and will cross post to Amazon if asked.

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
Yes I save all requests as emails and send a reply when the review is up.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
I want to know what the books are ahead of time and agree to review them. I don’t send out my address for random books to be sent to. I live in Canada so make sure you can send there.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Please send queries to Callista or Kathleen.

Meet Tez Says

Blog Name: Tez Says
Blog URL:
http://TezMillerOz.wordpress.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address:
http://tezmilleroz.wordpress.com/feed/
Blog Owner:
Tez Miller

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
I needed an outlet for my opinions ;-)

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
When people say they plan to buy a certain book, because my review helped them decide if it’s worth purchasing. Makes me feel useful ;-)

3. What types of books do you review?
Urban fantasy, futuristic, young adult.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
Most books I read are urban fantasy.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Literature, or anything that involves a lot of thinking on the reader’s behalf to get the most out of a book - I expect authors to do the thinking for me ;-)

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Ask first.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
No, sorry. I spend too much time on the computer as it is ;-)

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
If I approve of their topic, or I choose one for them.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
Sure.

10. Do you interview authors?
Only if I could be bothered. Which is rare, but it’s happened in the past ;-)

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
I haven’t before, but I’d be interested to.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
Books clearly marked as ARCs will be read almost immediately. Anything else has to get in line - I read books from shortest to longest, so the longer your book is, the longer it’ll take me to get around to reading it. If your book is 369 pages or less, I’ll start on it as soon as I finish the book I’m currently reading (which is 369 pages, if you were wondering where I pulled that number from).

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
http://flamesrising.com (if my editor approves), Shelfari, Facebook, GoodReads. Unfortunately, Amazon requires you purchase something from them before they’ll let you review.

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
If they request me to. Otherwise they can subscribe to my blog.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
Hard copy books only. And you must be willing to post to Australia, because that’s where I live.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Tez Miller. Share the summary, and if I like it, I’ll pass on my postal address.

Add any information you’d like to share that wasn’t covered in the questions below.
I’m not much for romance, but if your book is urban fantasy or futuristic, I’ll try it. I prefer dark UF to light. I specifically request futuristic, not hard sci-fi as I probably won’t be able to wrap my mind around it. To give you a better idea of what I’m looking for, here are some of my favourite authors (with specifications when necessary):

YOUNG ADULT URBAN FANTASY: Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Rachel Caine, Cassandra Clare, Melissa Metz (Fingerprints series), Laurie Faria Stolarz

YOUNG ADULT FUTURISTIC: Marilyn Kaye (Replica series), Mary E. Pearson (The Adoration of Jenna Fox)

YOUNG ADULT: Rachel Cohn, Robert Muchamore, Alex Sanchez, Shelley Stoehr, Jacqueline Wilson

URBAN FANTASY: Jennifer Armintrout, Kelley Armstrong, Keri Arthur, Jes Battis, Rachel Caine, Kim Harrison, Mark Henry, Vicki Pettersson, Jennifer Rardin, Lilith Saintcrow, Jeri Smith-Ready, Rachel Vincent, Kit Whitfield, Kim Wilkins

THRILLER: Nicci French, Tess Gerritsen, Alex Kava (Maggie O’Dell series), M. J. Rose, Erica Spindler, P. J. Tracy

FUTURISTIC: Eve Kenin, Michele Lang, Michelle Maddox, Stephenie Meyer

Meet She is Too Fond of Books

Blog Name: She is Too Fond of Books … and it has addled her brain
Blog URL: www.sheistoofondofbooks.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address:
www.sheistoofondofbooks.com/feed
Blog Owner: Dawn

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
To help me become more thoughtful in my reading; to process and retain what I’ve read

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
The dialogue that often ensues between other bloggers/readers and myself. The opportunity to “talk” with and interview authors.

3. What types of books do you review?
Literary fiction, general fiction, historical fiction, social history (see other notes, below), memoir (personal, not celebrity), children’s picture books

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
Literary fiction

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Celebrity memoir, horror/thriller, light chick lit

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Yes, after seeing a sample of the writing and a summary of the book

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
no

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
Yes!

9. Do you host book giveaways?
Yes!

10. Do you interview authors?
Yes!

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
Yes!

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
It depends on how I made contact with the author, when the book will be published and my schedule. I can commit to a date upon submission of the book if wanted.

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
I post on LibraryThing. I do not post reviews on Amazon.com

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
Yes, if requested.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
In general I need to see an excerpt of the book (writing sample), and a synopsis of the book (back-of-book-blurb); then I will decide if it meets my readership and personal reading “fit”

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed? http://www.sheistoofondofbooks.com/contact/

As for non-fiction, I am interested in social history – immigration, movements such as women’s movement and civil rights. Not military history.

My children are avid readers and can help with YA/middle reader reviews (girl age 12, boy age 10). The younger two do picture books and early chapter/easy readers (girl age 6, boy age 4)

I would invite authors/publishers to look at the index of my reviews, and read a few samples: http://www.sheistoofondofbooks.com/book-reviews/

Meet Book Reviews and Life

Blog Name: Book Reviews and Life
Blog URL: http//keener33.blogspot.com/
RSS or Atom Feed Address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/BookReviewsandLife
Blog Owner: Corinna Clark

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
I love to read and wanted to share my love of books and hopefully encourage people to try some of my favorite reads. Also it is hard sometimes to find a good book, and review sites help you to find some of the undiscovered treasures. I wanted to help others find those treasures.

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
When someone says that they read my review and thought the book sounded great and will now read it.

3. What types of books do you review?
I read thrillers, comedies, horror, drama, young adult and Christian. I do not like to read romance, western or historical.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
Perhaps Christian.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Probably not. Like I said, I usually steer away from historical, western and romance only because those books just don’t interest me.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
I’ve never been approached by any, but would love the opportunity.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
I haven’t ever tried them, but I would if the case arises.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
I don’t see why not.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
I haven’t, not sure where or how to do so.

10. Do you interview authors?
I would love to, but again have never had the opportunity.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
Have not ever done that.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
If I have a great book, 2 days. If I’m not as into the book, 3 to 5 days.

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
No

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
I have never thought to do that, but sure I would.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
I like to give enough information to pique interest in the book (if it is good) or enough to explain why I think the book is not good.

I then tell what I liked about the book or things that perhaps should have been tweaked. Then I rate it on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being one if my favorite books.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Corinna Clark

I am a someone who really gets into a book. I relate to characters and almost become a part of the book. I see and feel things that are happening as I read.

Meet Popin’s Lair

Blog Name: Popin’s Lair
Blog URL: proudbookworm.blogspot.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address: http://proudbookworm.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
Blog Owner: Popin

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
I’m a bookworm, but I found myself reading a lot of books and then forgetting that I read them after a few months. So, I decided to make a list of books I’ve read, but as I did this I found myself writing little reviews for them. After that, I decided to open up a blog and just write my reviews there.

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
I know you want an answer about the joys of book reviewing and getting books, but for me the most rewarding aspect of writing reviews is improving with Spelling and Grammar. I’ve always had a hard time with it and it isn’t something that comes to me naturally, so with each review and blog entry, I like the feeling that I’m improving as a writer.

3. What types of books do you review?
Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Thrillers, Romantic Suspense, Chic-lit, Historical Fiction, Dramas.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?

I would say Urban Fantasy and Thrillers.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Erotica.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
I have accepted self-published authors in the past, but only if their book interests me.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?

I prefer paperbacks, but if the book sounds like something I’d read I might review it in PDF.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
Of course.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
Sometimes, in my blog history I’ve only hosted 4 book giveaways.

10. Do you interview authors?
Yes. Though, I haven’t done a lot.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
Yes, I’m currently a part of the Pump up your Book promotion.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
It depends if it’s for review or not. If it’s a book I won, then I’ll wait a bit. If it’s a review copy, I try to finish it either by the week or at the latest within a month.

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
Yep. Along with my blog, I post the reviews on Amazon, Library Thing and the Internet Book Database.

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
Only if they ask me to.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
As long as it’s in book form, I don’t really have any other requirements.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
If an author wishes to contact me, my email is proudbookworm and from there we can hash out the details.

Meet Peeking Between the Pages

Blog Name: Peeking Between the Pages
Blog URL: http://peekingbetweenthepages.blogspot.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address:
Blog Owner: Darlene

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
What originally motivated me to create my book blog was wanting to have some kind of record of what I was reading and my thoughts on those books. I had been perusing book blogs for a while and thinking to myself how awesome they were while wondering if I could ever do that myself. Then when I started and got comments on what I was reading and people wanting to read it themselves I thought it was great and it spurred me on.

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
Most rewarding to me is all these wonderful books I’ve gotten to read and review-a lot by new authors and many others from authors, publishers and other book bloggers. I’ve come across a lot of books I may not have before and enjoyed them so much. Secondly I’ve met so many wonderful people I now call friends. The blogging community is so much more than just people who stop by to comment and discuss a book you’ve read. For me, a lot of them have become people I care about.

3. What types of books do you review?
I love to review general fiction and historical fiction.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
I would have to say general fiction. I love historical fiction but I’m not an expert on whether the facts are right or not, I just love the story and anthing I learn along the way so I do love to review them.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
I won’t review self-help, non-fiction(although I will do a memoir if it sounds interesting to me), or business type books.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Yes, but only if the story sounds interesting to me, something I think I’d like to read.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
This I don’t do. I don’t like to read books online due to my eyes-to hard to read for me. If an author can’t send an actual copy then no, I can’t read it.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
Most definitely. I love when an author does a guest post or participates in an interview. I think it’s great that they take the time to share with everyone like that.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
Absolutely! I like to have one at least every week, two weeks at the most.

10. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
I always try for a month. Sometimes things get busy and life gets in the way so on the safe side I’d like to say two-three months. When I get something from an author I like to make it a priority to read it as they were nice enough to send it to me.

11. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
I post my reviews on Library Thing, Good Reads, Shelfari, Book Blogs, Chapters.ca and I will be starting to post on Amazon soon too.

12. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
Yes, I do. I send them an email telling them that I’ve read their book, what I thought and the link to the review. This is only for authors who have asked me to read their books though.

13. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
My only requirements are that I have a hard copy of the book and also an understanding with the author that I will post an honest but fair review. If I didn’t care for a book I will say so. I believe in being honest with those reading my blog.

14. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Review queries can be sent to Darlene (Dar) at bj19662001

Meet Never Without a Book

Blog Name: Never Without A Book
Blog URL: http://never-without-a-book.blogspot.com/
RSS or Atom Feed Address:
http://never-without-a-book.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
Blog Owner:
Kathryn Wright

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?

Originally I found LibraryThing quite by accident and thought what a great way to organize my books. As I became more familiar with it, I discovered their Early Reviewers program and it naturally followed that I also found many members had blogs. Blogging about books by booklovers for booklovers made perfect sense to me. I wanted in on the fun, too!

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
I get to read lots of wonderful books, and then I get to tell lots of people about how great those books are and what I like about them! Hopefully I also encourage others to read them to!

3. What types of books do you review?
I like to read a variety of books. Women’s literature, sci-fi, romance, historical romance, fantasy, science fantasy, mystery, thriller. I love cookbooks, too.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
For many years I have read a lot of both romance, historical romance, sci-fi, and fantasy. I probably have the most expertise in romance.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Probably technological books. Those would be best reviewed by people with some expertise in that area.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Absolutely! They deserve just as much consideration as any other author.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
I’m willing to review e-books or PDF versions, although I find it takes me longer due to having to sit at the computer to read them. Regular books have the advantage of being portable.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
I think that would be a great idea!

9. Do you host book giveaways?
I’d love to! I haven’t had my blog up for very long so haven’t had an opportunity to do anything like a giveaway or a guest blog. I’m looking forward to it.

10. Do you interview authors?
I haven’t ever interviewed an author before, but am willing to.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
I haven’t yet, but would be willing to.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
1-2 weeks

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
I would also post to LibraryThing and Good Reads but haven’t posted anything on Amazon as of yet.

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
If the author would like to be notified, then certainly I would be willing to do that.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
No.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
Kyrissaean, attention Kathryn Wright

I love books and am willing to step outside my usual reading material. I have found that I can be pleasantly surprised by books I might not ordinarily pick up. Consequently I’ve learned to keep an open mind and give new and different books a chance. My biggest problem is that there are to many books….to little time. I usually have a book with me wherever I go because even the simplest errand can sometimes involve waiting and what better way to use that time than with a book.

Meet Confessions of a Bibliophile

Blog Name: Confessions of a Bibliophile
Blog URL: http://www.bookconfessions.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address: http://www.bookconfessions.com/?feed=rss2
Blog Owner: Jaime Shetrone

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?

Early in 2005 I found a livejournal site (I think) where people were posting about the books they read, with the goal of reading and posting about 50 a year.  I thought it sounded like a neat idea, so I started posting about what I was reading on my personal blog.  After a couple of years, I realized I was posting about books as much or more than I was posting about other stuff on my blog, so I decided to launch it as it’s own animal. 2009 will mark my 5th year blogging about books!

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
I like reading about what other people are reading, and how they felt about it, and I hope I can provide that for other people too. I have discovered hundreds of new books and authors since I started doing this.  Also, it helps me keep track of what I’ve read.

3. What types of books do you review?
I review everything I read. The genres I read most are suspense/thriller/mystery, historical fiction, general/literary fiction, and I’m starting to branch out a little more into paranormal fiction.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
Suspense, in its many forms, is what I read the most.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
I’m not a fan of verse, though I do pick one up every once in a while, and I don’t read a lot of non-fiction.  However, if the book sounds interesting to me, I may be willing to give it a shot.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
Yes.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
Yes.

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
I’ve never done a guest blog post, but I would be open to it.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
Yes.

10. Do you interview authors?
No.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
I haven’t.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
This varies widely.  If something is sent to me by an actual person (as opposed to me filling out a form on a web site or something like that), I do my best to move it up in the queue and get it read as quickly as possible.  But I admit I have some ARCs that have been hanging around my house for a few months.

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
Yes.  I post my reviews on Shelfari, Goodreads, LibraryThing, Amazon, and Facebook.

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
I try to!

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
Nope.

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
They can send them to me (Jaime) at ibeforem.

Meet Shooting Stars Mag

Blog Name: Shooting Stars Mag
Blog URL: www.shootingstarsmag.blogspot.com
RSS or Atom Feed Address:
Blog Owner: Lauren Becker

1. What motivated you to create a book review blog?
Well, we started the blog as an online zine (which we still refer to it as that) to talk about music. I began finding book reviewers who had blogs and since I love to read, I decided to add more into the zine then just music, and we now include books, movies, and other things related to entertainment.

2. What do you find most rewarding about book reviewing?
I honestly love the feedback from reviews. If people let me know they think a book sounds good or they bought the book based on a review I did, that’s so amazing. It’s great to hear! I also love supporting and promoting authors and I just hope it’s helping in some way.

3. What types of books do you review?
This is hard to answer because it honestly always depends. I’ll review pretty much any Young Adult book, though I do read and review Adult books as well. It doesn’t hurt to ask me to review your book, because it might be a different read for me, but I’ll try it if it sounds good…as long as it’s not erotica. That’s pretty much the main thing I won’t read/review.

4. In what genre do you consider yourself to have the most expertise?
I guess the most expertise I have would be in the Young Adult market, since that’s where my age range falls. I’ve been reading those kind of books longer.

5. Is there any type of book that you absolutely will not review?
Like I said above, I won’t review erotica, but beyond that, it all depends on how the book sounds to me.

6. Do you accept submissions from self-published authors?
I don’t mind self-published authors. If you really think it fits my blog, go ahead and ask. I tend to stay away from them most of the time unless it sounds really good.

7. Do you accept PDF versions or e-books for review?
I do, but not too many. You can ask, but it’s always going to be a “maybe” at first. I’d have to really think about it. I have read a couple though and have one lined up to read ASAP!

8. Can an author guest blog for you?
Definitely! I always love having authors guest blog and share their thoughts on their book or anything else they wish to share about. I think it’s fun for the readers as well.

9. Do you host book giveaways?
I sure do! I love giveaways, especially included with a review, because they read the review and can enter to win if it sounds good. But I’ll pretty much always agree to a giveaway!

10. Do you interview authors?
I do. I’m trying too interview some more, because it’s not a regular thing, but I’m usually always willing too.

11. Do you ever host stops on an organized book tour?
I’ve done one book tour so far and it was a lot of fun. I’d definitely consider doing more in the future.

12. What is the average turnaround time for a review, from the time the book arrives in your mailbox until the review is posted?
I’m definitely a slower reader then most, and I try and go in the order that I received the book as best as I can…since I don’t always. If you ask me to review it and would like a review by a certain time, I should be able too if I accept the book from you. Otherwise, it will be read/reviewed but it may take awhile. I do try though!

13. Do you cross-post reviews to Amazon or other sites?
I need to more, but I have posted reviews on Amazon as well. If you want me too, I will for sure! Just let me know!

14. Will you notify an author by email when a review is posted?
I almost always do, especially if they ask me too.

15. Do you have any specific requirements for review submission?
Not really. Simply let me know the name of the book and what it’s about and I should be good from there!

16. Where can authors submit review queries and to whom should they be addressed?
If you want to submit a review query, it’s easiest to email me on my actual email: lauren51990

I have one for the zine, and that works too, but this is the fastest way to get a hold of me.

I just want to thank Breeni for allowing me to fill this out and I hope you get in touch if you think my blog would be a good match for your novel whether for a review, giveaway, interview, guest blog, or anything else! We’re always open to emails!!!

Thanks!
